Continuity Editing- Task 3

Who is Kat's lover?

The first shot is a zoom and this holds for 6 seconds, it focuses on the two characters lying in bed awake. It increases tension and we want to know what is happening. The next shot is a mid shot looking at the guy in the center of the screen, he picks up his phone. This holds for a longer time of 12 seconds, so we can adjust to where he is and what he is doing, he then gets up and the camera pans upward, but it remains a mid shot. The longer time also means an enigma is created about the phone.  It then cuts to a baby in a crib in the foreground while we can see the mum in the background still in bed.  A match on action is used as her leaves the bed and as he passes the crib closer up. We then see the female character get up from the bed, as she sits by the crib the camera pans upwards so we can see her reaction. We know what both characters feel by their facial expressions rather than them speaking. It then cuts to Kat who is on her phone picking the petals of a bunch of roses. The audience can make a connection between her being on the phone and the phone we saw earlier.  This has been done by editing of these two shots together, as audiences fill in the gaps. The roses also give a big clue as roses have connotations of romance. The clip then involves three other men. This means that the audience have an enigma of trying to guess who it is.

Haven - (TV Show) - A conversation over dinner
The next clip starts with an establishing shot of the restaurant where the action is taking place, the restaurant is on the water and the cloud in the background look really dark and foreboding, the restaurant looks nice but isolated and the clouds could foreshadow the events. It then cuts to a opening sign and the name of the restaurant which further sets the scene to where we are and also gives us context. It cuts to inside the restaurant with various different camera angles and people. It then cuts to a medium shot of the two protagonists sitting down at a table, there is a match on action from the medium shot to a close up of her talking the label of her dress, this allows us to see what she is doing better, so that we can keep up with the storyline. The dialogue then begins and it cut together with over the shoulder shots and the use of eye line match while following 180 degree rule, this matches my expectations. There is also use of eye line match were one character looks in a direction of action and then we have a closer shot of this. The mood of the sequence is light hearted and then it turns dark when the fish dies, the sequence cuts increase in pace to add tension and suspense.
